Guyana and West Indies all rounder Narsingh Deonarine of the Albion Cricket Club is slated to receive the Berbice Cricket Board Cricketer-of-the-Year award on February 14 when the BCB hosts its third annual awards ceremony in the compound of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute.
Deonarine was the most prolific run scorer at the national level and scored 1,068 runs in last year’s West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) first class season. This sterling performance earned him a recall to the West Indies team for the tour to England and later Australia.
According to a press release from the BCB the event was organised by the Special Events Committee of the BCB and will be historic since it would be aired live on National Communication Network Channel 15. This would also aid in sensitizing the Berbice populace on the activities of the BCB.
Financial Director of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Company, Yog Mahadeo will be the guest speaker while PRO of the BCB, Hilbert Foster would do a review of the Board’s activities in 2009.
Keith Foster, President of the Board, Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha and Treasurer Anil Beharry would be among the speakers on the programme.
A total of 17 awards are expected to be shared out in the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 categories; Player- of-the-Year, Most Disciplined Player, Most Improved Player, Coach- of-the-Year and Umpire-of-the-Year are also other awards up for grabs.
The Albion Community Centre Cricket club will receive the Team-of-the-Year award after they won the national 40 overs Neal and Massy championships while the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club would carry home the Berbice Club-of-the-Year accolade.
The BCB would also present a special gift to each member of the Guyana and Barbados cricket teams, who will be contesting their fifth round WICB regional four-day game at the Albion Community Centre ground, during a cocktail reception in their honour immediately after the awards ceremony.
