It seems as though every time a Hindu national holiday comes along we have to put up with celebrations that are not conducive to what the occasion really stands for. Why is this not so for the other religions practised here in Guyana?
This total disregard of one’s beliefs is malicious and hurtful and should not be condoned by anyone, especially our Hindu devotees. We have had to put up with pageants, club parties, village limes and of recent, chutney shows in the name of our religious holidays. I shudder to think what will be brought to the National Stadium in terms of a chutney Phagwah Mela.
These promotions are disrespectful, disorderly and even vulgar, and should not be attributed to any of our sacred observances. The sponsors of these shows, especially the alcohol manufacturers and distributors should desist from supporting such occasions; the sale of alcohol at these events only adds to the insult.
It is very disturbing for the promoters of these shows to use observances which are sacred to make money for their personal gain. This practice sends the wrong message to the wider community and even some Hindus of what our religion truly represents. There are lots of ways to entertain and make money, so they should not taint our sacred holidays; there are very few things in this world that remain decent.
Programmes can be organized to celebrate our wonderful culture and religion in the way that is truly meant, and I call on all the Hindu leaders and their organizations to continue their hard work in making sure our practices remains pious and respected.
Yours faithfully,
