The main opposition has identified Dawn Hastings, of Akawaio Village of Kako, Upper Mazaruni, to fill the vacancy in the National Assembly created by the resignation of Anthony Vieira.
PNCR-1G leader Robert Corbin, as the representative of the party’s List of Candidates for the 2006 General and Regional Elections, extracted Hastings’ name, according to a party statement.
Hastings, the party said, is a trained teacher and she also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education Administration from the University of Guyana. She has been a teacher for several years in the Upper Mazaruni area and she is currently Headmistress of the Jawalla Primary School and acting as the District Education Officer of the Kamarang sub-Region of Region 7, Cuyuni/Mazaruni.
The party also noted that Hastings is fluent in speaking and writing the Akawaio language, and brings to the National Assembly a wealth of experience from her service to the indigenous people of Guyana in the area of education and social welfare. She is expected to take the Oath of Office at the next sitting of the National Assembly.
