Pele lift Mayor’s 75th birth anniversary knockout trophy

Pele Football Club could not have asked for a better start to their 2010 campaign when they lifted the Mayor’s 75th birth anniversary knockout trophy on Friday day after an exhilarating 4-1 whipping of the ‘Hammers’ Alpha United at the Tucville ground.

The seven-a-side tournament saw Pele advancing to the final via a 3-1 win over Crane with goals from Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant, Mervin Joseph and Sheldon Holder while Crane’s lone goal came from Junior Bobb.

Alpha, on the other hand, struggled through to the top and won by penalty shoot-out over the ever-improving Riddim Squad.

But in the final, Pele’s ace striker Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson was too much for the ‘Hammers’ as he entertained the appreciative crowd with another brilliant display of football.

Pele’s other goals came from Grant, Joseph and the hard hitting midfield dreadlock player – Konata Manning.

Elton Browne, back in the line-up for Alpha after months of being off the pitch, netted his side’s only strike in the final.

With the win, Pele became $300,000 richer and also went away with the MACORP-sponsored first place trophy with Alpha settling for the $100,000 runners-up purse.

Crane rebounded to finish third place and collected $60,000 for their victory over Riddim Squad who received $40,000 for their efforts.
