Team Guyana bounced back from their two opening losses to Australia and New Zealand to earn an honourable 12-12 draw against France Friday night in the USA IRB Sevens World Series competition in Las Vegas.
According to the International Rugby Board (IRB) website, the Guyanese turned in a superb performance against the French who are ranked number five in the world.
English-based players Kevin McKenzie and Dominic Lespierre scored a try each.
Lespierre scored the game’s first try but Theodore Henry missed the conversion.
Two minutes later France’s Mathieu Acebes scored for his country but Paul Albaladejo missed the conversion.
McKenzie sealed the draw for Guyana with his try and made good the conversion.
Later in the encounter McKenzie missed a drop kick which could have sealed the win.
Meanwhile, in their other showing yesterday, Guyana lost to hosts USA 33-12 in the quarter finals of the Bowl competition with Lespierre and Ryan Gonsalves scoring the team’s only tries.
Guyana went on to the Shield competition where they lost 7-31 To Scotland with winger and captain Claudius Butts scoring a try and Henry a conversion.
The 16-nation tournament ended yesterday.
