Have you noticed that Guyanese calypso and soca songs seem to have no permanency and are rarely heard much after Mashramani celebrations are over?

Quite apart from the fact that the majority of the lyrics of these songs are unnecessarily heavily politically biased, the tunes might be more attractive if more attention were paid to the bass component by the accompanying musical band. Some Trinidadian and other calypsonians may seem not to have a particularly good singing voice, but the bands that back them up all have a bass section. For example, Shadow may not win a singing contest but the band that accompanies him has an attractively compelling bass section, the beat of which makes his songs so attractive to so many.

The Guyanese bands of today sound very funny without a solid bass component. In the  future, therefore, our calypso and soca aspiring monarchs would do well to ensure that the bands that accompany them carry a heavy bass component.
