Police in Berbice were yesterday investigating the discoveries of two dead bodies – a male and a female – at two different locations in the Ancient County.
Yesterday morning, the partially nude body of an unidentified male, of East Indian ancestry, was discovered in the compound of CGX Resources Inc, at Seawell.
The bloated, decomposing body was covered with insects and police had to spray it before they could begin investigations.
The discovery was made by a passerby, who notified the police in New Amsterdam.
On arrival at the scene, the police had to force open the padlocked gate of the compound as there was no one on the premises, not even security guards.
The body was dressed in underwear only and was found lying face down close to and clearly visible through the compound’s fence. A pair of red slippers was found near the corpse, while a red shirt and three-quarter denim pants were found some distance away.
A gardener at work across the street from the compound told this newspaper, that he did not hear or see anything suspicious, but later learnt about the body.
Curious residents of the area came out to gape at the body, but no one recognized the man. Meanwhile, the body of a 68-year-old woman of Killmanack, Corentyne who was said to be a heavy drinker and of unsound mind was discovered face down in a trench at Maida Farm, Corentyne around 6 am yesterday.
The woman, Dorothy Mangrie who had been consuming alcohol on Tuesday evening was last seen alive around 9 that night walking along the road.
The woman’s body, clad in a black top and a black and white skirt, was found one village away from her home.
Police sources said that she must have fallen into the trench in her intoxicated state and that foul play is not suspected.
She was discovered in front of the home of an ice vendor who recalled that he had heard his dog barking wildly around 10.30 pm on Tuesday.
The man said he shouted at the dogs to stop and did not realize anything was amiss until the following morning when he went onto his veranda and spotted the body in the trench.
According to residents it was a regular habit of Mangrie to consume alcohol. She would also be seen walking the road “all day from Cromarty to Maida.” The woman, who was separated from her husband and whose only son is dead, lived alone.
Both bodies were taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital Mortuary and post-mortem examinations are scheduled for tomorrow.
