Fraser, Melville entertain on opening night

-Toucan Mash junior squash tournament

Juniors Patrick Fraser and Alec Melville played entertaining squash on the opening night of the Toucan Industries Inc, Mashramani Junior tournament Tuesday night at the Georgetown Club’s courts.

Fraser and Melville played an epic five setter in the GSA’s first junior tournament of the year, which ended with a 3-2 win for Fraser.

The tournament is being used as a yardstick for the selection of the junior players to train for upcoming international engagements, and a national training squad will be shortlisted at the end of the week.

Tuesday night, both Fraser and Melville made a case for selection.

Melville won the first game 14-12 before Fraser rebounded to win the second and third sets 11/7, 11/9.

Though Fraser had match ball at 10/9 in the fourth, it was Melville who came roaring back to force a decisive fifth set with a 12/10 win in the fourth.

The fifth set was close throughout but eventually Fraser prevailed 11-8.

The action continues this evening from 6 pm.
