A 26-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for beating his father with a length of wood that contained several nails.

Ramchand Chunilall of Grove, East Bank Demerara entered a guilty plea to the charge of malicious wounding when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him.

He admitted that on February 7 at Grove, East Bank Demerara, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Chandayal Chunilall.

He stated that he and his father had a misunderstanding shortly after they had consumed  a bottle of Banko wine and he picked up a piece of wood and dealt him a single lash to his arm.

He stated that soon after he apologised to his father.

However, Chandayal stated that the issue arose when he met his son in his house. He said that his son had broken into his house by breaking off the padlock on the door while he was away.

He said that he scolded his son about this and in turn his son picked up the piece of wood that contained several nails and dealt him several blows about his body.

He then ran to the police station and made a report and subsequently went to the Diamond Hospital where he was treated and sent home.

Chandayal stated that his son only beats him when he is drunk.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford requested that the magistrate take into consideration that this was not the first, second or third time that Ramchand had beaten his father. He stated this was also not the first time that such a matter against Ramchand came to court.

“The VC is suffering at the hands of his own son and this should not be allowed to continue,” added Telford.

A distressed looking Ramchand was soon escorted out of the court by a policeman.
