Guyanese cricketers continue to shine in the twin island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) professional leagues.
Last week in the first round of the national championship Carib Sunday League 50-over tournament, GDF all-rounder Travis Blyden (110) stroked the first century for Rousillac United against Woodland at the Woodland ground. He was supported by GNIC opener Elton Baker (71 not out) as their team successfully chased Woodland’s 216 by recording 217-2.
When Woodlands batted, Baker took 2-26 from his 10 overs.
Malteenoes Sports Club all-rounder Deon Ferrier smashed 76 and Kevon Pierre 74 as Aranguez piled on 284 against Queen’s Park. When Queen’s Park replied another MSC all rounder Kellon Carmichael picked up 3-26 with support coming from Keanu King who took 4-59 as Queen’s Park (159) were beaten by 125 runs.
Carmichael bowled Uthman Mohammed with the first ball of the Queen’s Park innings as the batsman left alone an in-swinger and lost his off stump.
In Division One two-day cricket, out-of-favour national all-rounder Steven Jacobs playing for Evergreen currently finds himself among the top three batsmen in one of the top tiers in T&T cricket. He told Stabroek Sport yesterday that he has been working on his batting in T&T.
He also revealed that the standard of cricket that he has been exposed to has the feel of a West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) regional first class tournament. He pointed out that he has played against players such as T&T national players Reyad Emrit and Richard Kelley (to name a few), who play for the Comets.
Jacobs, in his first match, playing against Clico Preysal Evergreen won that match by taking first innings points. He made 17 in the first innings and then an even 50 in the second while discarded national opener Shemroy Barrington scored 22 and 20 as Everegreen made 156 all out in the first innings and 361-8 declared in the second innings.
Clico Preysal were routed for a paltry 116 in the first outing at the crease and then were on 12 when the match ended. In the match against the Comets, Jacobs scored 49 out of his team’s score of 146 all out and Barrington 19 replying to 213 made by Comets.
In the second innings the former WI Captain stroked 53 and Barrington 19 as his team was bowled out for 156 before the Comets won the match outright when they were set 89 for victory. Jacobs then scored his third second innings half century (68) against front runners Merryboys (365-5 declared) but his team went down by an innings and 161 runs.
Evergreen were bowled out for disposed of for 78 and 126; Jacobs made 31 in the first innings and Barrington’s poor form continued when he made five and then two in the second innings.
