PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Rawl Lewis brought delight to the Windward Islands with his steady leg-spin that undermined Trinidad & Tobago’s batting in the WICB regional first-class championship on Friday.
Lewis captured five wickets for 81 runs from 30 overs, as T&T were dismissed for 263 in their first innings about an hour before the scheduled close.
Windwards then reached 23 for one at stumps on the opening day of their sixth round match at Queen’s Park Oval.
Off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth bowled opener Miles Bascombe for six with his first delivery to give T&T a late confidence boost.
The home team had similarly started the day brightly, when openers Adrian Barath and Justin Guillen posted 90 for the first wicket, as T&T reached 108 for two at lunch.
Lewis made the breakthrough, when Guillen was caught at long-on for 37, and two balls later, added the prized scalp of T&T captain Daren Ganga caught at slip for a duck edging a back-foot drive.
After the interval, Lewis struck an important blow, when he removed Barath to open the floodgates.
Barath marked his return to competitive cricket, following a hamstring injury with a solid 59 from 91 balls in just over two hours before he edged a lazy drive to slip. He struck eight fours.
T&T limped their way to a respectable total through a slew of hand innings with Sherwin Ganga scoring 39, Darren Bravo 36, and Gibran Mohammed 26.
Lewis continued to work his way through the T&T batting, and gained essential support from fellow spinners Gary Mathurin and Shane Shillingford.
Mathurin captured two for 34 from 12.3 overs, and Shillingford took two for 62 from 22 overs.
