A 40-year-old female trader was on Monday remanded to prison when she appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton charged with possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Gaitree Singh of 46 Sheriff Street, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to having in her possession 421 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking on February 10 at Lot 6 Sheriff Street, Georgetown.
Singh’s attorney, Ronald Burch-Smith told the court that his client sends clothes, footwear and confectionery into the interior and on the day in question she had given a parcel to a taxi driver who then took the package to a shipping company in Georgetown.
His client was then arrested a week later. Burch-Smith cited the window period when the package was given to the taxi driver and the time his client was arrested.
He then asked that bail be granted to his client who he said is a mother of two.
Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels objected to bail. According to the prosecutor, the defendant gave the taxi driver a sealed box to post together with $6,000 to pay the freight charge.
The box, Daniels said further, was delivered at the Ogle Airport and after investigations by the police it was found with the illegal substance. She was then summoned and identified the box as hers.
Daniels asked that the defendant be remanded and the matter transferred to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court. Her application was granted.
Singh is to return to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on February 26.
