BBC Caribbean News in Brief

A new report from a UN watchdog says that drug trafficking has become a major security threat in Central America and the Caribbean, and is contributing to increasing drug abuse and homicides linked to organised crime.

The findings are contained in the annual report of the International Narcotics Control Board.

The document says drug traffickers in Central America and the Caribbean are increasingly using light aircraft with stolen or falsified registration numbers to transport illegal substances.

The report also stated that drug trafficking by sea also remains a problem in the region.

Buy Haitian products, says Lula

Brazilian President, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, yesterday called on the international community to support earthquake-damaged Haiti by buying products made in that country.

In a newspaper article entitled “The world needs Haiti”, published in Spain, Mr da Silva also urged contractors to resume their investment plans in the country.

“After the current emergency, Haiti will continue to face the challenge of ensuring a productive capacity that enables the development of the country,” he said.
