Sprint ace Chaves Ageday has been nominated by the Athletics Association of Guyana to participate in the South American under-23 championships scheduled for Colombia from March 14-30.
However, the athletics aspects of the games will be held from March 20-23 which would rule Ageday, who ran the world junior 200m qualification time last year, out of the first leg of the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) in Cayenne, French Guiana from the 26th-28th next month.
Contrary to an earlier report it was confirmed yesterday that Ageday attends the Bygeval Secondary School.
Guyana are the defending champions in Track & Field at the IGG.
President of the AAG Colin Boyce said yesterday that it was unclear whether Ageday would return in time from the games in Colombia for the CARIFTA Games in the Cayman Islands from April 3-5.
The junior athlete, who is also the national schools’ champion, won the sprint double at the IGG trials at the Enmore Community Centre ground last Sunday where he registered times of 10.9s and 23.3s in the 100m and 200m events respectively.
Another premier athlete who will also miss the IGG is Jevina Straker of Tutorial High School (THS) because of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations in May for which she is now preparing. Straker, who won the 2009 CARIFTA Games 800m title in St. Lucia, was also not selected for the IGG team, and there is no certainty whether she will be defending her title in the Cayman Islands.
