In what was touted as “massive operation,” 20 officers travelled 50 miles up the river using two boats and destroyed the plants in an effort to stifle the ganja trade.
A few persons were spotted in the fields when the police visited on Thursday and bolted, leaving a pot of food cooking on the fire.
This newspaper learnt that about 10 boats were stopped and searched along the way but nothing illegal was found.
Some residents in the area had told this newspaper that the last raid was carried out by police in Berbice about five years ago. They were happy with the exercise and recalled that over a year ago police from Georgetown had conducted similar raids.
