Stabroek News has been reliably informed that the incident occurred earlier this month at an area called Canal Bank located just on the outskirts of Port Kaituma. The man, who had been living in the same house with the children, was taken into custody but has since been released and residents fear that because he is originally not from there that he may soon flee the area.
Concerns were also expressed over the advice given to the family by an official of the Community Development Council (CDC) of the area which was that they should forgive because they are all Christians.
“These girls are just children and he telling them to forget about it after what this man did to them…,” a resident said.
Reports are that the girls, aged 11 and nine, are motherless and their father lives in some miles away from the community where it happened. The girls usually stay at a relative in Canal Bank so as to facilitate their attendance at the Port Kaituma schools.
Stabroek News was told that neighbours observed what was happening and reported the matter and the man was held. The children were examined by the medic of the area and statements were taken from the children and the relative they live with.
“This thing really worrying and the police not saying nothing about the investigation they just say that the matter is under investigation and that the file gone for advice. But the man roaming free and we understand that he would be shipped out of here,” a resident said.
The Child Care & Protection Agency has been informed of the situation and has promised to investigate.
