Dennis Bacchus, 45, of Cemetery Road, Mocha, East Bank Demerara and 24-year-old George Mc Clennon were placed on $30,000 bail each when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly beating and robbing a man of cash and a wristwatch.
They entered a not guilty plea to the joint summary charge of robbery with violence when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to them.
They denied that on February 26, they robbed Carlton Omomula of $10,000 cash along with an $8,000 wristwatch.
Bacchus stated that he was walking along South Road on the day of the incident when a police vehicle with four policemen drove up alongside him. He said that the policemen came out of the vehicle and told him of the allegation and then placed him in the vehicle.
He said that while in the vehicle the police stopped on Charlotte Street and picked up Mc Clennon.
He noted that he did not know Mc Clennon and was baffled as to why the police alleged that they had committed the robbery.
However, Prosecutor Stephen Telford stated that the wristwatch was found in Mc Clennon’s pants pocket after he was apprehended and searched by the police.
Meanwhile, Mc Clennon stated that he didn’t know anything about the robbery but maintained that the watch belonged to him.
The magistrate subsequently transferred the case to Court Two for March 30.
