Two contrasting centuries from Georgetown Cricket Club’s (GCC) opening batsmen Wasim Haslim and Ricardo Jadunauth yesterday conspired to put Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) under pressure and wrest first innings points on the second day of the GCB three-day first division tournament at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground.
Haslim scored a whirlwind 110 from 69 balls, 16 of which went to the ropes and five beyond while Jadunauth stroked a patient 111 from 236 balls with eight fours and a six as their team ended day two on 373 and a 160-run lead. The two shared in a 143 first wicket stand before Haslim was dismissed via the lbw route; Jadunauth departed close to the end of play off the bowling of Walter Henry.
The undefeated batsmen at the crease are national batsman Vishal Singh on 65 (44) and Jeetendra Sukhdeo on nine. Earlier, Leon Johnson (53) and Jadunauth took their team past GNIC’s first innings score of 213 all out in 63.4 overs.
The Woolford Avenue-based team’s top scorer came from Jermaine Grovesnor who made 41 while Marvin Fitzalbert and Rayon Griffith knocked up 40 runs each. GCC medium pacer Winston Nelson was the main wicket-taker with 3-96. He got support from Gavin Singh, Raj Nanan and Kevin Ogle who returned figures of 2-21, 2-29 and 2-42 respectively.
Over at the Malteenoes Sports Club ground (MSC), Police restricted Nandy Park to 134 all out from 42.3 overs.
Police’s Pernel London (4-39), Vishal Jaigobin (4-48) and national bowler Trevor Benn (2-10) rocked the East Bank team with Mark Anthony Robe contributing 34 and J. Martin, 25.
Police were earlier dismissed for 233 from 45.5 overs with Benn, resuming from last weekend, top-scoring with 66.
Cecil Adams stroked 31 while Jason Heyliger chipped in with 26. D. Hudson snared 5-52 from his 16.5 overs and J. Martin gave good support with 4-65 from 20 overs for Nandy Park.
Over at the Guyana Defence Force ground the home team easily dispatched the University of Guyana (UG) in two days. Batting first UG was dismissed for 51 and the GDF responded with 127. In UG’s second time at the crease they made 121 setting GDF 46 for victory that they eventually achieved finishing on 51-1.
