According to a release from the Government Infor-mation Agency (GINA), the new well which will complement another existing one in the community, was officially commissioned by Water Minister Irfaan Ali.
While addressing those gathered, Minister Ali stated that the new well is another accomplishment for the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) noting, that the new well is one of several targets set by the agency earlier this year.
According to the release, Minister Ali stated that the administration has allocated in excess of $378M to offset developmental projects within the Housing and Water Ministry, which includes plans for the completion of six water treatment plants in various areas including Lima, on the Essequibo Coast, Vergenoegen in Region Three, Central Ruimveldt, Sophia and Queenstown in Georgetown and at Cotton Field in the Region Five area. The new projects will encompass new service connections, meter installations and transmission mains.
According to GINA, the new well at Lusignan, which is some 890 feet deep and has the capacity to provide potable water for an estimated 4000 persons, produces 163 cubic meters of water/hour, which the release stated will adequately supply the intended beneficiaries. The project was funded by the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF).
The release stated that in this year’s budget, some $2.7B has been allocated for the water sector and this sum will be expended on various projects, with the focus being on the extension of services to communities without water supply, as well as improving the quality of service in areas where water supply infrastructure exists.
