Dennis ‘Chow’ Hunte has been officially certified by Special Olympics Caribbean after he attended a three-day football coaching seminar in San Juan, Puerto Rico from February 21 – 23.
The seminar was attended by 11 participants from seven countries and was conducted by FIFA’s Ceasar Vaccoa from Chile with the aim of improving Special Olympics in the Caribbean.
Both theory and practical aspects were done with the main objective of categorizing athletes into the four divisions of football and teaching how to effectively use training equipment.
“While the workshop was going on, Puerto Rico had their Special Olympics Games in progress and we were given the opportunity to assess and place the athletes in their respective categories,” he said.
Hunte said that the workshop was a great experience and although football does not change, the little points passed on to him were important because they stressed the importance of athletes learning the basics of the sport.
The former national football coach will be sending written reports back to the SOC during a three-month period so that they can monitor how the workshop has paid off.
National Director of Special Olympics Guyana, Wilton Spencer, said he was delighted at Hunte’s success and disclosed that a letter was e-mailed to him by Dr. David Benjamin, Director of Sports for SOC.
It stated that Hunte will make a good S.O. coach because of his knowledge of the game. Added to that, Dr. Benjamin noted that he has targeted the Guyana programme and is looking forward to working along with the organization.
He also made it clear that he would be conducting a workshop for coaches during April – May in Guyana.
