A 16-year-old charged with the murder of a Canal Number Two grandmother during a robbery in 2008, was recaptured on Wednesday, a day after he escaped from the Turkeyen Police Station lock-ups
Police said that an internal investigation has since been launched into the circumstances surrounding the teen’s escape.
The juvenile is charged along with Vishal Seecharran, Nigel Sookram and Steve Sookdeo with the murder of Budhia, at her home between October 19 and 20, 2008.
Budhia, of Conservancy Dam, woman was asphyxiated. Bandits, one armed with a gun and another with a knife, had struck at the home and tied up the three female occupants; Budhia, her daughter Basmattie Rampersaud and Rampersaud’s daughter, Shivanie.
The bandits had terrorised the women for about an hour before escaping with more than $1M in cash and jewellery.
Budhia had been tied up and gagged and was heard gasping before she went silent.
