I do agree that Link Show is our best satirical review but I can’t help but wonder if that’s because of our limited choices. I didn’t think all of their acts were funny. But I’ve been told that’s because of my false sense of superiority.
So you think I’m about to complain about Link Show 26? Wrong! You’re 40-something-percent wrong. I liked more than 50 percent of it. Unfortunately, that means it was good and I can’t bash it. I guess I’ll just have to prove that nitpicking isn’t all I can do.
Henry Rodney got a few laughs out of me when he sang “Salt Fish”. When I heard Henry sing “Salt fish it sweeter than pork…But de taste does lef’ pon top ah you tongue” I couldn’t help but crack up. But at least I had lots of company in all you Link Show fans.
However, the “Pothole” song was one of the better acts at Link Show 26. The guitarist Francis Bailey with his straw hat and comical expressions when he sang “Ow…Ow mi goy” had the man next to the woman behind me screaming for the Lord, as she laughed. Since I’m not nitpicking I won’t point out that I liked Francis more than his lyrics and that if it weren’t for him the “Pothole” song would be in for some serious criticism. The Link Show crew should thank Uncle Francis for making “Pothole” a hit with his “Ow…Ow mi goy” and his pleading puppy face.
Our Folk Songs was a very creative piece. I loved every minute of it. For a brief moment I even imagined myself on the dam when I heard “Lily gyal, Lily gyal, wa mek you brazen so”. Yes, see me on the dam lifting up my skirts and being the country temptress. Well, no, I didn’t actually imagine that and no, I’m not promoting promiscuity like the folk songs.
Now – before I go on to tell you all about my favourite character at Link Show 26 – I’ve got to say that the idea of giving out those eco-bags (that’s what they were called in Link Show’s programme) was a good effort to make us more environmentally conscious. But I can tell you that everyone who collected an eco-bag is walking out of the market or some store with no less than two plastic bags today! You might as well tell the soda giants to stop circulating plastic bottled beverages.
Ajay Baksh. Now he made my night at Link Show. For those of you who don’t know – I didn’t either – Ajay is the guy who played the part of the president. Yeah, yeah, so Ajay did have a little too much hair but heck did he walk the walk and talk the talk! In fact, Ajay’s hair made it all the funnier! In fact, between Ajay and the “Salt Fish” song I wrote a little ditty about the Link Show:
“Link Show – give Dr Prezo hair
Link Show – dem mek me stare
Link Show – like Dr Prezo use miracle grow?
Link Show – yuh mek Dr Prezo glow.”
