The Lady Jaguars team reigned supreme in Group `A’ of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) 2010 Female World Cup Qualifiers when they completed a 1 – 0 victory over the St. Vincent and Grenadines yesterday at the GCC ground to top the group.
The two from two record will surely serve as a boost to the home team’s confidence ahead of the tournament’s second round.
Yesterday the Lady Jags had an even larger supporting contingent than in their game against Suriname and they did not disappoint, dominating the game both offensively and defensively.
In the first half Guyana launched a relentless attack down the flanks and got in the 18-yard are where they put the opposition under immense pressure.
Guyana’s attack was effectively because they had a lot of numbers forward but when it came to finishing the girls were off target and did not trouble the St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ custodian.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines, on the other hand, though on the back foot, managed a few good runs against the Lady Jags.
They could have taken the lead in the first half when a play, developed from a corner kick, found the back of the net but the goal was disallowed as the referee ruled that the striker was in the off-side position.
In the second half, the island team started putting more players back to guard against the tiring attack by the Lady Jags but just a few minutes in the half the belligerent Alison Heydorn got an opening to score in the 18-yard box and scored.
After the match Technical Director of the female team, Mark Rodrigues, said that the coaches were elated with the team’s performance.
Rodrigues said the game went according to their game plan and expressed gratitude on behalf of the team to the Government, Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and partners for the support they have put into the team.
