The ACIC’s Mohamed Shahid won first place in the Senior Male category, Tilishaw Abdool won the first place in the Senior Female class and Farzana Persaud won the first place in the Junior Female group. Zaheer Mohamed of Mon Repos won the Junior Male category, according to a news release from Public Relations Officer Raymond Azeeze.
The release said Shahid overcame stiff competition from Azad Bacchus who won second place and Faizul Bacchus who won third place. Faizul Bacchus’s performance showed the strong challenge he will be presenting at the International Qaseeda Mehfil set for Trinidad and Tobago next month. Berbice’s Ameer Baksh won fourth place.
Additionally, Naseba Nabi, Zaleena Ahmad and Kaneez Scherazade won the second, third and fourth positions, respectively, in the junior female class while Fareeda Nabi and Shameena Waheed won second and third in the female senior category.
Ajib Meerza and Nasir Sattaur judged the contests, the release said.
The contest culminated three weeks of activities held to mark Eid Milad 2010. It was hosted by the Muslim Youth League of Guyana, the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman and the ACIC. The aim of the competition was to select a Guyana team to participate in the international competition, which will be hosted by the Anjuman Sunnatul Jamaat Association in Trinidad and Tobago, during the Easter.
