A Corentyne hire car driver had his driver’s licence suspended after he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol when he appeared before Magistrate Krishendat Persaud at the Number 51 Court yesterday.
On March 10, Doodnauth Persaud, 44, of Swamp Section, Rose Hall Town was driving his taxi, HA 4897 along the Number 51 Public Road when he was stopped during a police campaign and tested with the breathalyser. The level of alcohol in his system was found to be 271 micrograms [instead of 35] and he was subsequently charged with the offence.
This is the first time a driver in Berbice had his licence suspended for the offence. Several other persons have been placed before the court for the offence and the matters are pending.
One of the persons was said to be carrying a “bogus” licence. Police sources told this newspaper that the suspension should work as a deterrent and a warning for other drivers.
