Collin Josiah, a father of 11, was on Wednesday remanded to prison for allegedly being involved in an accident on Valentine’s Day that left a man unconscious until his death several weeks after.
Josiah, 53, of Lot 22 North Sophia was not required to plead to the indictable charge of causing death by dangerous driving when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on February 14 at Nelson Mandela Avenue and East Ruimveldt Front Road, Josiah, a supervisor of Federal Management Systems, drove motor car PLL 13 in a dangerous manner, resulting in an accident that killed Nazeem Juman.
Attorney Sase Gunraj, in a bail application, stated that Josiah had been employed at Federal Management Systems for over ten years and had no previous convictions and posed no risk of flight.
He also stated that shortly after the accident his client was arrested and later placed on $100,000 station bail and he had fully cooperated with the ranks at the East La Penitence Police Station.
However, Prosecutor Stephen Telford objected to the bail application.
He stated that the accident occurred because Josiah failed to stop at the junction.
The impact of the collision left Juman unconscious, and he remained in that state in hospital, until his death on March 3.
Juman’s wife, Rajmattie Ramlakhan, who was also in court, told the magistrate between sobs that her two children are suffering the most from the loss of their father and she does not know what to do now since the breadwinner of her home is dead.
The magistrate subsequently refused the bail application and transferred the case to Court Seven for March 16.
