Two prisoners were apprehended on Sunday evening hours after they gave Lusignan Prison officials the slip.
A senior police source yesterday said that the prisoners were found and returned to the Lusignan Prison by police ranks and Guyana Prison Service officers.
“I don’t know their status,” the source said when asked whether the prisoners were dangerous.
When this newspaper contacted Director of Prisons Dale Erskine via telephone for a comment he said that he was in a meeting and couldn’t talk. Efforts made to contact him after were futile.
However, Stabroek News understands that the two men were among a group of inmates outside the prison’s parameters carrying out allotted manual labour when they managed to escape.
The team of police and prison officers immediately launched a search for the escapees.
They were subsequently discovered a few villages from Lusignan, the police source reported, but could not say which village.
