Buxton United pulled off a stunning win while defending champions Alpha “The Hammer” United struggled to a 3-2 win as the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League competition continued at the Enmore Community Centre ground Sunday.
Some five matches were contested Sunday with Milerock of Linden overcoming Seawall United of West Demerara 1-0 at the Wales Community Centre ground while Linden’s Topp XX went down to Bartica’s Liquid Gold 0-3 at the Bartica Community Centre Ground.
At the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Guyana Defence Force and Rosignol United battled to a 1-1 draw in the other fixture.
The East Coast Demerara games provided great excitement with Buxton United outrunning and outmanoeuvering Sunburst Camptown to win 2-1.
Alpha United, warmed up for their upcoming international engagement by pulling off a 3-2 win over Victoria Kings in a keenly-contested encounter.
The East Coast teams gave a good account of themselves against the much-touted Georgetown heavyweights with Buxton United being the standout team.
The Buxton side made their intentions clear early in the match with several goal-mouth raids with Colwyn Barnwell being denied twice by Camptown’s goalkeeper Ritchie Richards.
Camptown captain Nigel “Powers” Codrington, also missed a sitter and his teammate Jamal Greaves’ solo effort failed to get past an advancing Buxton goalkeeper Orson Washington who had a superb afternoon between the uprights.
Buxton took the lead almost on the stroke of half-time when Clive Andries broke away on the right side and powered a right-footer past Richards.
The home side kept up the pressure in the second half with Robin Philips, Andries and Barnwell launching several raids in Camptown’s goal area but Orlando Gilgeous and Richards staved off the challenges.
Buxton pushed further into the lead in the 80th minute when Phillips slipped his marker and sent a high shot over an advancing Richards to find the back of the net.
With the clock ticking down, Buxton relaxed their guard for Camptown to pull one back off a Lance Ralston strike with just three minutes remaining in the match.
When the final whistle sounded the Buxton, side celebrated their second win in this year’s Super League.
Earlier, Alpha United trailing 0-1 at half time edged out Kings thanks to a second-half double strike from Dwain Jacobs.
Kings had taken the lead in the 39th minute when Seon Robinson found the back of the net and the East Coast side resisted their opponents’ assault throughout the first session.
The goal-hungry Jacobs netted his first goal in the 56th minute to level the score but Robinson netted again to push his team further into the lead in the 69th minute only to see Alpha equalizing once again one minute later off the boot of a lurking Sean Bishop in the penalty area.
Kings failed to hold their nerves and succumb to the pressure with Jacobs netting the game’s winner in the 77th minute.
