Dear Editor,
I wish to respond to an article published in Stabroek News on Wednesday March 10th 2010 which said `Indigenous leaders call for hold on LCDS, REDD+ projects’.
I find it a very ridiculous demand that Government should put on hold something that would be beneficial to all Guyanese.
I take this opportunity to say to my Amerindian brothers and sisters don’t be misled by persons who seek to satisfy their own personal agenda.
I wish to say that as the chairperson of the National Toshaos’ Council (NTC) I am aware of the fact that many Toshaos and their respective villages are in support of the LCDS, REDD+ initiatives.
The Amerindian Peoples of Guyana are capable of making their own decisions. I say this to clear the air that at no point in time according to my knowledge were Toshaos encouraged by myself or by the Minister of Amerindian Affairs to write letters in support of the LCDS.
The executive members of the NTC recognize the need for more information sharing we also know that it is a very costly exercise to reach every village in every region.
As such we are in the process of seeking financial support to carry out awareness sessions in every region.
These sessions are expected to provide relevant information to leaders and community members that would enable them to make well-informed decisions regarding their participation and further support for the LCDS, or whether to opt in or not.
It is of great importance that we the Amerindian peoples take on the responsibility of setting the course for our future generation. In so doing should we all hinder further development of Guyana until the people of the Upper Mazaruni settle their outstanding land claim?
Please be reminded that presently Amerindian Lands are not part of the LCDS, and it will not be so until we decide to opt in to the strategy; the criteria for which are still being finalized.
The Amerindian NGO’s were invited by Government to be part of the Multi Stakeholders Committee which is chaired by His Excellency Dr Bharrat Jagdeo.
This is the forum where the land issues could have been discussed and maybe a settlement arrived at.
However the Amerindian Peoples Association did not see it fit to be part of this very important committee. It is very disappointing to know that this recognized NGO is not willing to work along with Government and the NTC in order to settle these issues that they are highlighting.
As chairperson of the National Toshaos’ Council I will continue to represent the rights and interest of the people to the best of my ability.
I would now like to say to my Amerindian brothers and sisters let us all work towards a brighter future and let progress continue.
Yours faithfully,
Yvonne Pearson
