A man was remanded to prison yesterday after being accused of unlawful possession of a gun and ammunition.
Dexter Morrison, 31, of Lot 130 North Sophia, pleaded not guilty to the charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and a quantity of ammunition when he was arraigned before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton. He denied that on March 16, without lawful authority, he had in his possession a .38 revolver and six matching rounds of ammunition without having a firearm licence in force at the time.
He was represented in court by attorney Vic Puran, who applied for bail on the grounds that his client is a taxi driver and a father of three.
He said that his client had no previous brushes with the law and that he posed no risk of flight.
However, Prosecutor Joel Ricknauth objected to the bail application on the grounds that Puran presented no special reason for bail to be granted to the defendant in the matter.
He also noted that, according to information gathered, the defendant is a gold miner and not a taxi driver.
Morrison is expected to make another court appearance on June 26.
Reports are that Morrison was arrested in Rasville, Roxanne Burnham Gardens, after the gun and ammunition were found in a car that he was driving when mobile police patrol stopped and conducted a search on the vehicle.
