White, a labourer of 35 Lusignan, East Coast Deme-rara is accused of stealing one bag of mangoes on March 12 valued at $7,000, the property of Felix Thurman.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and told the court that he was hired to transport goods belonging to Thurman to his stall in the market. A day later, he said, he was accused by the VC of stealing the mangoes. He said that he left all the bags and did not know mangoes were in one of them.
The court’s evidence is that the VC had given the defendant the bags to transport but he failed to leave the bag with the mangoes. When he was confronted by the VC, he started to run. He was then picked up by the police patrol. Bail was set at $10,000 with the matter returnable for April 13 in Court 10.
Meanwhile, Trim, a handyman of 226 Garnett Street, Newtown also pleaded not guilty to his charge which alleged that on February 15 at Charlotte Street, he stole one rear view mirror valued at $13,000, property of Corletta Mackenzie.
An eyewitness said that the defendant was seen next to the VC’s car on the day in question. Trim however said that he usually frequents the area but was not next to the car as he was across the road. He was released on self-bail and the matter is set to continue in Court 10 on April 29.
