Experienced draughts player Elton Lambert carted off the senior title while Wilfred Robinson was the winner of the ‘B’ category when the recently-resuscitated Guyana Draughts Association held a two-day tournament at the National Stadium last weekend.
Lambert, who won the previous tournament staged by the association last year, recorded 33 points to come out ahead of Wilbert Freeman who recorded 31 points for second position with Robinson third on 25 points and Khemraj Pooranmall with 21 points fourth in the Sunday ‘A’ division showdown.
Two players, Jairam, President of the (GDA) and E. Grandison finished with 19 points apiece.
Robinson was an easy winner in the ‘B’ division played Saturday with 38 points followed by Pooranmall in second place with 32 points.
Third place went to Jairam with 27 points with Mark Braithwaite claiming fourth with 25 points.
Ulric Braithwaite and B. Downer occupied the other positions.
GDA president Jairam said he was pleased with the turnout for the two-day tournament which attracted 25 players.
He said Director of Sport Neil Kumar witnessed a few of the matches.
The Ministry of Sport donated four trophies and made the stadium available to the association. They also donated six boxes of draught pieces, Jairam said.
Other sponsors included Brans Security Service, GT&T, Pomeroon Oil Mills, Haroon Bacchus, Mohamed’s Enterprise, Guyana Stores, P&P Brokers, Kei-Shars Shopping Complex and Two Brothers Gas Station.
Meanwhile, the holder of ticket 971 won the association’s raffle with ticket 1374 securing the second spot, 155 third and 1362 fourth.
The five consolation winners were tickets 1263, 1104, 270, 1103, and 592.
