LAS VEGAS, Nevada, CMC – World-renowned fight conditioner Roger Mayweather is scheduled to conduct a one-week training camp in Barbados next month.
The training camp is an initiative between Barbadian promoter Sam Layne and the Barbados Ministry of Tourism. It will take place following the May 1 fight between Mayweather’s nephew, Floyd Jr and Shane Moseley.
Roger runs the Mayweather gym in Las Vegas, where Barbadian Shawn-Terry ‘The Sniper’ Cox is undergoing an intense training stint.
Mayweather is looking forward to the trip which is the latest of a number of similar training camps he has conducted outside of the United States.
“Boxing skills are the same no matter where you go,” Mayweather told CMC Sports Wire yesterday.
“Fighters just have different ways of doing it. I just think I know the best way to do it to counteract different styles.”
Mayweather has high praise for Cox, but he also felt that Christopher ‘Shaka’ Henry, another Barbadian that has sparred at his gym, was also impressive.
“[Shaka] did pretty well, but this guy [Cox] is bigger and has more skills,” he said. “The whole object is to learn and that is why he is here.”
Mayweather put Cox through a more intense programme than the Barbadian was accustomed to before.
“He never worked the way I have him working now,” said the boxing conditioner. “I work him non-stop. The whole object for him is to build that endurance and keep that condition.”
When asked what he felt about Cox’s age being against him in terms of going after a World title, Mayweather was quick to point out how many of the current boxers have had extended careers.
“George Foreman came out of retirement after 20 years and went on to win a World title,” he said.
“This just shows you what you can do if you believe in it. Basically, it’s just a matter of how dedicated you are. You have football players return, basketball players return, so boxing is the same thing.”
As for the big clash between Floyd Jr and Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather knows Floyd’s work ethic is high, would love the fight to come off, and put the question of who is the best pound-for-pound fighter to rest.
“As his trainer I have faith in [Floyd Jr] to stay on top of his job,” said Mayweather. “The public wants the fight, but I believe the ‘Pacman’ doesn’t.
“He would sign that paper if he wanted the fight to happen. Here’s a guy getting US $100 million, and he doesn’t sign that paper? Something has got to be wrong.”
