Walking Boys of Suriname recorded the first victory of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) club championships Guyana leg when they defeated the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) team in the Group D match at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground yesterday. GDF went down 2 – 1 in the battle in front of their home crowd where they played a fitter, more organized squad.
Walking Boys will now face Guyana’s Alpha United tomorrow at the same venue from 16:00hrs.
The army team can blame themselves for the defeat, playing without urgency and displaying poor communication.
The Suriname team went ahead by two goals at the end of the first half, compliments of Sastro Medjo and Soares.
The defence of the Walking Boys team was solid throughout the encounter and it surely gave GDF a tough time even though they were clearly ahead on ball possession, they wasted numerous chances which come back to haunt them later in the match.
GDF’s midfield struggled tremendously but the defence prevented any more scoring opportunities for Suriname.
Walking Boys, playing positive football, blocked out GDF for quite a while.
However, GDF pulled one back with six minutes of injuries and stoppages time on the clock when Delroy Deen scored with a firm kick from the left flank.
GDF’s final opportunity to score came in the final minute of injuries and stoppages time but it was squandered like the numerous other chances which effectively cost them the match.
