Corriverton Tennis Club, Nash Tennis Club, Dynamos Tennis Club, Le Ressouvenir Tennis Club and Marian Academy Tennis Club were formed this new by the GLTA under president Christopher Ram.
According to a release from the GLTA:”After several years of decline in community tennis, the GLTA has recently seen a sharp rise in tennis club activity.”
According to the GLTA release, the revival of interest in tennis in the local community led to the staging of the annual Inter-Club tournament which served off last weekend.
The aim of the Inter-Club tournament is to “develop the necessary camaraderie amongst players to bring back the glory days of recreational tennis,” the GLTA release stated.
The Inter-Club tournament is being contested by the four of the five clubs named above along with a Combined Club which includes players from the Wimbledon and Dynamos Tennis Clubs.
The competition format is round robin where each club was asked to field a minimum of five players and maximum of eight players. A total of 15 ties are being played and each tie consists of two doubles matches and one singles match.
In the first seven ties, competition has been intense so far with the Combined Club winning in its first two ties against Georgetown Tennis Club 2-1 and Roraima Tennis Club 2-1. Nash Tennis Club is close behind with two wins over Le Ressouvenir 3-0 and the strong junior Park Players Club 2-1.
In other matchups Georgetown Tennis Club beat Nash Tennis Club 2-1; Park Players beat Le Ressouvenir 2-1. Roraima Tennis Club beat Park Players 2-1. Matches continue this weekend at the three venues Pegasus Tennis Courts, Nash Tennis Court and Le Ressouvenir Tennis Court.
