A tough battle between Walking Boys of Suriname and Guyana’s Alpha United football team ended in a draw as the Guyana leg of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships continued at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Ground yesterday.
The Group D match finished 1 – 1 but it would have been a different story had the players from the Alpha United team capitalized on the numerous squandered opportunities.
Elisa Afonsoewa drew first blood for Walking Boys scoring in the 12th minute while Elton Browne’s 40th minute goal put the match back on even keel.
Walking Boys lead with four points with Alpha on one point. The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is yet to record a point.
Both Guyana teams are in a must-win situation to advance to the next round.
They are scheduled to meet in what is expected to be a nail-biting encounter tomorrow at the same venue from 4pm.
Coach of the Alpha United squad Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover said that his team’s performance was totally disappointing.
“It was very disappointing how they played because I don’t think there is anything we haven’t covered in our practice sessions and as a coach it’s very bad to see them not execute it on the field,” Dover stated.
He also disclosed that it was poor decision making that led to the plays not being executed properly in a game where Alpha controlled ball possession.
Dover told Stabroek Sport that he was surprised at the way the opposition played knowing that since they won the first game they would have been a bit laid back in the encounter.
“Our match against GDF on Tuesday will be a tough one as with any team that is desperate to make it to another stage but we will be prepared because we have to win.”
Suriname played attacking football in the first 20 minutes while United, after being one goal down, found themselves on the backfoot.
But Alpha switched to attack mode playing with a high formation and were soon rewarded with a goal after constantly swarming the opposition’s citadel.
The second half was packed with a lot of close shaves for both teams but Alpha often had easy opportunities to go ahead but muffed those chances again and again.
