– says Coach Marlon Washington
Coach of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) football team Marlon Washington believes that his team will defeat Alpha United in the Group D-Guyana leg of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships today at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Ground.
Second placed Alpha United could advance to the next round with a win or a draw in today’s encounter.
Suriname’s Walking Boys who ended the group’s play-offs with four points are already through to the next round while Alpha United gained a point after holding Walking Boys to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
The army boys are without a point and must win today in order to be in contention for a place in the second round.
“We have worked on our ball control, psychology and field of play since our game against Suriname on Friday and I think we are even more prepared to face Alpha,” Washington stated.
He pointed out that the defeat against Walking Boys came because players who were expected to deliver did not live up to expectations.
“Looking at Alpha’s game against Suriname yesterday (Sunday) we studied their weaknesses and are ready for play.
“It is sad that only one Guyana team will be able to go forward but we are soldiers and when it matters the most we always come out on top.”
Alpha United’s coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover said yesterday that supporters and the opposition can expect a much better performance than Sunday’s from the Alpha United squad come match time.
“We went back to the drawing board and will do things differently because our faults were identified so we decided to change the way we play. Our forwards are expected to deliver this time around because it was very disappointing how they played on Friday,” Dover disclosed.
Dover said he was certain that the weaknesses of his team were not exposed in the game against Walking Boys.
“They did not play according to the game plan,” was his explanation for the draw.
He, however, said that his players were now ready mentally, physically and tactically for the encounter against the army squad.
“The players will be responding more because we are not out. Our confidence is still there so we are set to play as we normally do, I don’t think GDF players are going to expect us to play a defensive game and let them have control. We will ensure that we win that game,” he stated emphatically.
