– GABA president Trevor Rose on the passing of Kevin Lawrence

Family and friends are mourning the death of local basketball star Kevin Lawrence.

The 28-year-old Lawrence died at 00:40 hours Saturday morning at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after experiencing post-surgery complications on Friday afternoon, following surgery he underwent earlier that day.

Lawrence had sustained severe injuries to his back and neck after being involved in a car accident in Suriname a month ago and was a patient in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at the time of his passing.

A wake was held last evening at his mother’s residence in Festival City.

The gifted basketball player, a member of the first division team of the Ravens Basketball club, had represented Guyana at both the junior and senior levels.

Lawrence, the second of two boys, leaves to mourn his father, Francis Toby Lawrence and mother Norma Lawrence.

He will be missed by numerous friends, family, fans and his co-workers at the National Insurance Scheme where he worked ever since graduating from St. Stanislaus High School.

Speaking with Stabroek Sport, President of the  Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), Trevor Rose expressed his deepest condolences to  Lawrence’s family.

Rose added that he was shocked when he heard that Lawrence died because he had visited him at the hospital before his demise and everyone expected him to pull through because they were getting positive reports on Lawrence’s recovery.

Rose said he was at the airport when he heard that Lawrence had passed away.

He said the young basketballer’s passing was a sad moment for the basketball community and most people were deeply shaken to hear of his demise.
The GABA along with the University of Guyana Students Society (UGSS) and local basketball clubs will host a night of tribute tomorrow night from 7pm for the late Kevin Lawrence at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall .

Lawrence will be buried next Tuesday at the St. James-The-Less Anglican Church, David Street, Kitty.
