A Guyanese man, Dellon Williams, 31, who fathered the baby of a young lady who was a minor at the time, was found guilty of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 16 years by a nine member jury yesterday in the British Virgin islands.
Following a three and half hour deliberation, jurors returned a guilty verdict for Williams who will be sentenced on April 27, 2010.
Williams who was on bail during the course of the trial was remanded to prison, according to the bvinews.com
The prosecution alleged that between April and June, 2008 at Belle Vue, Williams had sex with the minor at his home. The virtual complainant was 15 at the time while Williams was 30.
According to the report, prosecution witness Inspector V. Vanterpool, an officer attached to the Family and Juvenile Unit, had cautioned the accused in December 2008 for the offence and he told her: “We did not have sex… I was tempted but I controlled myself when I think she was only my friend… and I did not want anything to happen to her. I respected her parents. I really don’t know much about these things but I would like to talk to her parents to tell them what I have to say.”
According to court records, the defendant gave the VC his telephone number, and the two corresponded via text messaging. Sometime during the dates Williams invited the VC to his home where he allegedly proceeded to kiss, fondle and then have sex with her.
The act came to light in November 2008 when the VC was taken to the hospital to be examined for an infection – and it was revealed that she was eight months pregnant.
The following month the VC gave birth and DNA testing pinpointed Williams as the father.
