A West Demerara man charged with causing the death of a police detective by driving dangerously was granted bail when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Feroze Bacchus, 29, of 38 Alliance, Canal Number Two was not required to plead to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving and was granted bail in the sum of $300,000 by Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin. It is alleged that last Sunday on the Nismes public road, he drove mini-bus BMM 1485 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Devin Cummings.

Police had said investigations had revealed that Cummings, a detective corporal, was riding his motor cycle along the roadway when the driver of a mini-bus drove out of a service station and collided with him.

He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police had said.

Following the accident, Bacchus was arrested. In a bail application, his lawyer told the court that Bacchus is a Monitor Officer with Customs at the airport. The attorney said his client has been married for five years, has one child and a permanent place of residence. He said that Bacchus has never been before the court before.

Bail was granted and Bacchus was ordered to return to court on April 29 at the Wales Magistrate’s Court.
