Dear Editor,
In Guyana last year, the performances of vulgar dance hall artistes, who keep our young people up until the wee hours of the morning with inappropriate lyrics and messages, were banned then allowed tor reasons which have not yet been given to the public. Those of us who understand the greed and immorality of some sections of this administration, would know why.
I passed through Barbados this week and am pleased to learn that the Head of Government took a firm stand and banned Mavado and others, in order to protect the moral structure of their society.
I hope that those responsible for policies in Guyana, our religious organizations and others who should have the responsibility to give guidance and inspiration, will take note.
A worrying development in our country, is the stony silence of our religious, academic and social leaders in the face of immorality, corruption and inappropriate behaviour, the old wisdom that ‘silence gives consent’ holds true today, and our social and religious organizations must no longer, as one leader told me, harbour fear, to speak out, if they fail, they will be as guilty as those who are the initiators of this moral decline now evident, in our society.
Save our children and Guyana.
Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green, J.P.
