A nurse attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital appeared last week before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson charged with conspiring to commit a felony and uttering a forged document, with regard to granting her permission to leave the country.

It is alleged that between March 4 and 13, Gevita David, with intent to defraud, conspired with persons unknown to forge one letter, purporting to be issued by the permanent secretary, Ministry of Health, granting her permission to leave the country.

Additionally, it is alleged that on March 13 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, David uttered a forged letter to immigration officials so that she might leave the country, knowing same to be false.

To both charges, she pleaded not guilty.

Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat in his bail application said that David is 24 years old and resides at 1827 Diamond Housing Scheme and has no previous record. He said the defendant did not know that the document was forged and so there was no conspiracy on her part. He then asked that reasonable bail be granted with the court taking into account a nurse’s salary.

The prosecutor did not object to bail and David was granted $70,000 bail on each count.

The matter was then transferred to Providence Magistrate’s Court for April 22.
