Fans in the stands at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Tuesday night erupted with glee as Maccabees scored a one point victory in overtime over Beepat’s Scorpions in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Open and Third Division Leagues.
Backed by their passionate supporters, Maccabees took the sting out of the Scorpions to win their Open match-up 61-60 thereby continuing their winning streak.
In the other two Open games of the evening, Bounty Colts defeated Eagles 86-70 and Courts Pacesetters scored another easy win by trouncing Colors Panthers 73-56.
Maccabees and Scorpions started the proceedings off with a bang when the two evenly-matched teams went head-to-head in the first game of the night.
Maccabees were down by four at the end of the first quarter but, fuelled by their energized supporters, they were off and running with an eight point lead at half time.
Nevertheless, Scorpions managed to crawl their way right back into the game and the scores were tied 51-51 at the end of the fourth quarter.
Five minutes overtime was added to the clock and the high-tension game continued as the teams continued to trade baskets.
In the end the Maccabees players and their supporters were ecstatic when the team maintained its one point lead when the overtime period expired.
Darren Thomas led the scoring for Maccabees with 19 points while Hodayah Stewart assisted with 18.
Corwin Blades racked up 20 points for the Scorpions.
Coming back from an agonizing one point defeat a few nights earlier and playing without their dominant inside player Vivian Aulder, Bounty Colts looked as though they would have faltered to Eagles who took control from the inception.
But the Eagles’ dominance was short-lived as Bounty Colts ended the first half with a nine point lead.
That lead increased as the game progressed to 18 in the third quarter with little resistance coming from the Eagles.
The Colts forced a lot of turnovers from Eagles as they ended the game with a 16-point lead.
Oneca Fraser and Desmond Chin scored 26 and 20 respectively for the Colts while Mark Wills top scored for Eagles with 14.
Courts Pacesetters in their game set and early pace which they were able to maintain throughout with the help of some good shooting from the three-point shoot-out star Stephon Gillis who scored 14 points and was backed up by Kurt `Gypsy’ Elias’s 12.
The Panthers appeared to be making a comeback just before half-time and they came out with the same aggression in the third quarter, but the experience and skill of the Pacesetters players quelled their surge and they finished the game in style with some flashy dunking from their high flying guard Hugh Arthur.
