The Guyana Netball Association (GNA) bounced off its 2010 season with a march past of the affiliated teams and its Annual Awards Ceremony last Saturday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
The ceremony saw four teams taking part – the Doves Netball Club of Berbice, Emanie Netball Club, All Stars Netball Club and Rim Rockerz Netball Club.
The march past was taken by the President of the GNA, Dr Maxine Parris-Aaron who deputized for the Minister of Sports who was unavoidably absent.
In his address at the opening ceremony the Secretary, Lawrence Griffith, thanked all those who in some way assisted the GNA in getting through another year.
He highlighted the significant contributions of the Ministry of Sports, the Guyana Olympic Association and Ramesh Trophy Stall. He stated that for 2009 the challenges were huge but the rewards were gratifying.
He lauded the GNA president for leading the association with determination, dignity and dedication and he urged her to keep up the good work so that netball will continue to benefit.
The secretary noted that the GNA is diligently seeking a piece of land of its own to establish a netball facility.
The president in her feature address further emphasized the achievements of the GNA and extended her gratitude to the Board members for their unconditional support. She encouraged the parents, friends, players and supporters of the GNA to remain focused.
She said that although the GNA did not attain all its goals she was satisfied with what they accomplished. She noted that the sport was linked to healthy lifestyles and more participants meant healthier individuals, and was a benefit to the country overall.
At the awards ceremony, All Stars, Fearless Flyers and Doves received prizes.
Among the individual achievers Odessa Browne was the Best Center, Fiona Halley was the Best Wing and Princess Gardner received the Best Goal Shooter award.
All three are members of the Fearless Flyers Netball Club. All Stars also carted away three individual achievements with Joy-Ann Blair voted Best Wing Defence, Shonette Estwick, Best Goal Attack and Simonica Fanfair, adjudged Best Goalkeeper.
