Cheddie Bacchus reportedly stole a car yesterday from D’Urban Street and was intercepted a short distance away by police who shot him in the leg as he attempted to flee.
Bacchus, who has been before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court several times for simple larceny and robbery charges, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital shortly after the incident.
When Stabroek News arrived at the medical institution shortly after 4.30 pm Bacchus’ relatives were still outside the Accident and Emergency Room. The injured man had already been x-rayed and was on his way to theatre at the time.
“This thing happen around 3 o’clock time,” a Princes Street resident told Stabroek News. “Apparently this boy [Bacchus] see some taxi driver lef’ his keys in the ignition on D’Urban Street and he jump in the man car and drive off with it.”
This newspaper learnt that Bacchus made it to Princes Street where he was intercepted by a mobile police unit. Bacchus, according to reports, jumped out of the stolen vehicle and made a dash for the Le Repentir Cemetery.
“Is when he dash for the cemetery,” the resident said, “is then the police fire off the shot.”
The resident said the bullet hit Bacchus just below the left knee causing extensive damage. Bacchus underwent surgery yesterday.
