An elderly woman is now nursing injuries in the Georgetown Public Hospital after she was struck down by a minibus on Saturday.
Eighty-two-year-old Ursula Nelson was hit by a minibus as she was waiting to cross the road around Saturday midday, her relatives said. Nelson of 34 West La Penitence Housing Scheme had just exited a bus on Light Street and was waiting to cross the road when she was hit by an East/West Route minibus. The woman was going to pick up her glasses, this paper was told.
According to Nelson’s daughter, Morlene Nelson, her mother passed out after being hit.
The daughter also stated that the driver, who has since been released on station bail, claimed that her mother was the one who walked into the bus’ path.
The daughter is contending that the man was released because his father is a police officer. Nelson sustained a fractured pelvis, abrasions to her face and knee and a cut over her right eye. Morlene meanwhile is concerned that her mother may end up in a wheelchair and has since sought legal advice on her next move forward.
Meanwhile, taxi driver Yevette Goring, 42, who was injured while on duty on Easter Monday, says she is unable to sit up.
Goring of 569 Cummings Lodge, who works with GI Cabs and drives vehicle HB 5744, said she was heading back to base when a “big black vehicle” slammed into the back of her car.
According to Goring the black vehicle was a Toyota Tundra and it was trying to overtake her at the head of Aubrey Baker Road but a vehicle in the oncoming direction forced the driver to pull back behind her. She said that she was wearing her seatbelt at the time and suspected the driver was speeding.
He collided into the back of her vehicle and she says that she hit her chest. Goring said she remembers is waking up in the hospital. She sustained chest, back and head injuries and cannot sit up because of her injuries.
According to her brother, the driver of the Tundra was held and is in police custody at Brickdam Police station. The vehicles are also there. There was an eyewitness to the crash and that is how the driver was apprehended, Goring said.
