Some corporate citizens yesterday threw their weight behind the Hugh Ross Classics scheduled for May 2 at the National Cultural Centre.
Wholesale and retail boutique Fazia’s Collection, Buddy’s Gym and Boxer’s Cheap & Sweet General Store donated undisclosed sums of monies to the committee responsible for the panning of the exhibition currently in its third year.
The event was first hosted in 2008 to honour the achievements of one of Guyana most celebrated bodybuilders, Hugh Ross.
Supervisor of Fazia’s Collection Marisa Beckles and Manager of Boxer’s Hugo Lewis, former WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super featherweight champion, both declared that they are pleased to be associated with the event, which has received the blessing of the Guyana Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (GABBFF).
They noted that their establishments have been supporting the event from its inaugural championship in 2008 and the companies will continue to pledge their support.
Beckles and Lewis assured that the companies feel proud to be associated with supporting athletes to reach their fullest potential.
On the other hand, Manager of Buddy’s Gym, Seelall Pharbo pointed out that it was the entity’s first year making a contribution to the Hugh Ross Classics but he believes that after this year they will continue the sponsorship. He said that it was his company’s pleasure to be associated with this upcoming venture, the same way it has supported other ventures of this nature.
Athlete Coordinator and former Mr Guyana Leroy George said that the organizing body is pleased with the support of the companies and the competition will live up to its name as it has done over the years.
Meanwhile, in a release from the committee it was stated that although GABBFF is collaborating to promote bodybuilding and fitness, the Classic championships will provide an alternative stage for athletes to showcase their physique and talents.
It also noted that the rewards are different from the GABBFF hosted events and it encourages a higher level of competitiveness and more intense rivalry.
“It is the committee’s aim to tangibly reward participants at this event since we are cognizant of the fact that preparation for such competitions is costly,” the release stated.
