$50,000 fine for unlicensed driver

Magistrate Ann McLennan fined a construction worker $50,000 after he pleaded guilty to the charge of being an unlicensed driver, when he appeared in the Christianburg Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge.

Phillip Glasgow, 31, of 181 South Amelia’s Ward, on Monday drove motor vehicle PHH 1345 at Lovers Lane, Amelia’s Ward without being the holder of a driver’s licence. In his defence, Glasgow said that he had never been issued with a driver’s licence and was only helping out with a situation. He then asked the magistrate for leniency.

Magistrate McLennan reminded Glasgow of the risks of breaking the traffic laws. She then ordered him to pay the fine in one week or the alternative of three months jail.

Meanwhile, Magistrate McLennan fined Leando Deane, of 83 South Amelia’s Ward, $10,000 or the alternative of two weeks jail for breaching the Road Traffic Act. He was charged with using motor vehicle PMM 368 for a purpose other than what it is licensed for, contrary to section 19(2) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, on January 13, on Pine Street.

Deane was given one week to pay the fine. He was also put on a bond to keep the peace for 12 months or the alternative of six months imprisonment. The bond was instituted against him because he was familiar to the court.
