It is alleged that on April 6 at Georgetown, Roberts assaulted Michael Abrams, a policeman in plain clothes. He pleaded guilty. Roberts is a vendor and resides at Continental Park.
He said that he and Abrams were in the same bus when it was stopped by police and they were made to disembark. In the process of doing so, he said that he accidentally “jammed” Abrams who became annoyed. He said that he told him that he did not mean it and it was an accident.
Abrams reportedly chucked him and he did the same in retaliation. Upon hearing his explanation, the magistrate entered a plea of not guilty.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford said that on the day in question, the parties were in the same bus travelling when it was stopped by police. It was found that the driver was unlicensed. Roberts then began to hurl remarks at the police uniform. It is alleged that he was told by Abrams, who was in plain clothes, to behave himself, and he became annoyed and cuffed Abrams in the face.
Roberts also told the court that he and Abrams have had previous problems which arose out of both of them befriending a woman. He maintains that he did not know that Abrams was in the bus and did not do anything to him.
The case was transferred to Court 2 for April 14.
