Chelsea Edgill and Jamaal Duff have qualified for the Cadet Championships in the Dominican Republic in September after they copped gold and silver respectively at the Caribbean Pre-cadet table tennis championships in Utuado, Puerto Rico last week.
This was revealed at a press briefing yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall by the General Secretary of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Godfrey Munroe. He said that the GTTA will be looking for them to continue lifting their performances especially since they will be competing against players from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean and that the competition will be of a higher level.
Further, he said that the GTTA will be looking to field a team for the US Open later in the year so the onus is on players to continue to produce their best performances in overseas and domestic tournaments. He reminded the players also that while the GTTA has its role to play, the responsibility is on the players to practice and play hard.
At the recently concluded games in Puerto Rico Edghill defeated Carla Brito 11-5,11-3, 9-11,11-7, and 11-6 and Duff lost to Brian Afanado 9-11, 9-11, 9-11, and 8-11.
